What does the Bible say about dinosaurs? Find here

Contribution: Suzanna Joseph

Dinosaurs were unheard of approximately 200 years ago. After 1822, people became familiar when scientists found fossils and bones of this giant faced animal. This creature fascinated people of all ages. Countless books were written and movies were made on this rare animal. Scientists put together its skeletal structure for display in museums.

Investigation began in the year 1820 when Gideon Mantell, a British paleontologist, excavated extraordinary bones and teeth and he felt that it differed from other animal remains. Research continued, although later contradicted, assuming dinosaurs as an analogy for the lizard species. Dr. Richard Owen, a British zoologist, was credited for coining the word ‘Dinosauria’ meaning “Terrible Reptile” or “Fearfully Great Reptile”. However, scope of research widened, rejecting the initial hypothesis as scientists discovered that dinosaurs were relatively different from regular lizards. Since lizards cannot stand upright whereas dinosaurs can balance on their limb and apparently they vary in size weighing around 80 tons and 40 feet high.

Evolutionist’s point-of-view is that dinosaurs existed millions of years ago. 65 million years ago when a meteorite crashed into the surface of the earth causing their extinction. These are only scientific hypothesis since none of the scientists saw dinosaurs walking the earth. They make inconclusive estimations using bones and fossils found in several locations and created indecisive analogies. However, from a Creationist’s perspective the Bible is the word of God and that God gave visions to its authors and guided them how the universe came into being and what is its future. The book of Genesis specifically narrates how the universe was created. According to them, the earth came into existence only thousands of years ago and at the same time dinosaurs roamed the earth. Scientists agree that most of their discoveries were already mentioned in the Holy Bible.

For instance, the earth rotates on its own, “God stretched out the northern sky and hung the earth in empty space.” (Job 26:7)

Another citation about 2800 years ago, the prophet Isaiah stated that the earth is spherical. “It was made by the one who sits on His throne above the earth and beyond the sky; the people below look as tiny as ants. He stretched out the sky like a curtain, like a tent in which to live.” (Isaiah 40:22)

If scientific realities are proven in the Bible then dinosaurs existed and must have been mentioned in the Bible.
Then God commanded, “Let the earth produce all kinds of animal life: domestic and wild, large and small” — and it was done. So God made them all, and he was pleased with what he saw. (Genesis 1:24-25).

The book of Job describes:

15 Look at Behemoth,* whom I made along with you,
who feeds on grass like an ox.
16 See the strength in his loins,
the power in the sinews of his belly.
17 He carries his tail like a cedar;
the sinews of his thighs are like cables.
18 His bones are like tubes of bronze;
his limbs are like iron rods.
19 He is the first of God’s ways,
only his maker can approach him with a sword.
20 For the mountains bring him produce,
and all wild animals make sport there.
21 Under lotus trees he lies,
in coverts of the reedy swamp.
22 The lotus trees cover him with their shade;
all about him are the poplars in the wadi.
23 If the river grows violent, he is not disturbed;
he is tranquil though the Jordan surges about his mouth.
24 Who can capture him by his eyes,
or pierce his nose* with a trap?

Scholars infer that this description supports the existence of dinosaurs. The dinosaur is one of God’s majestic creatures initially God created all animals to eat plants only. The dinosaur’s tail moves like a cedar tree and it has the strongest bones. Man has been capable of taming all other animals except the Dinosaur.
