Inauguration of New Grotto at National Marian Shrine, Mariamabad
Mariamabad: On August 24, 2024, the National Marian Shrine in Mariamabad witnessed a momentous occasion as His Grace Archbishop Benny Mario Travas, Apostolic Administrator of the Archdiocese of Lahore, inaugurated the newly constructed Grotto. The event marked a significant milestone in the shrine’s history, drawing a large gathering of clergy, pilgrims, and local faithful.
A New Chapter for the Shrine
Fr. Tariq George, Rector of the Shrine welcomed the distinguished guests including, Fr. Asif Sardar, Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Lahore, and members of the Pilgrimage Committee, the clergy and Mr. Emmanuel Athar Julius, Member of Punjab Provincial Assembly. Fr. Tariq George provided a brief history of the Grotto, explaining that the old structure had fallen into disrepair despite multiple renovations. The new Grotto, constructed to replace the unsustainable mud-based building, promises to be a lasting testament to the devotion of the faithful.

Holy Mass and Reflection
Following the inauguration, a Holy Mass was presided over by Archbishop Travas. In his introduction, Fr. Tariq warmly welcomed the gathering and highlighted the significance of the day, remembering the feast of The Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The first reading was taken from Isaiah 9:1-6, and the Gospel reading from the 1st chapter of the Gospel of St. Luke.
In his homily, the Archbishop emphasized the importance of loving God with all one’s heart and soul, as exemplified by Mother Mary. He encouraged the congregation to meditate on God’s word, just as Mary did, and to listen to God’s call, as Samuel did. The second aspect of love, he stressed, is loving one’s neighbor, citing Mother Mary’s selfless sacrifice of her most precious possession, Jesus Christ. Let us learn from Mother Mary’s example, who said ‘Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word.’ May we too surrender ourselves to God’s will, trusting in His plan for our lives. Amen!

Foundation Stone Laying
The foundation stone of the newly constructed Grotto was laid on May 13th, 2024, by His Grace Archbishop Sebastian Francis Shaw, accompanied by Fr. Asif Sardar, Fr. Tariq George, and other dignitaries.
