Cricket matches played between Clergy and Catechists in Karachi

Karachi (Agahi News) – In commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the establishment of the Archdiocese of Karachi, a series of social activities kicked off with a riveting cricket match held between the Clergy and Catechists of the Archdiocese. The match, which took place on Monday, June 26, 2023, at the esteemed St. Peter’s Cathedral Ground, witnessed an exhilarating contest between the Clergy Lions and Catechists Lions. The distinguished presence of Archbishop Benny Mario Travas further elevated the event, as he graced the occasion with his participation and offered prayers, instilling a sense of encouragement and camaraderie among the faithful in their respective teams.

Notably, in the 1st match, the Catechists Lions emerged victorious in the toss and elected to field first. They successfully restricted the opposing team to a score of 62 runs in 6 overs, subsequently setting a target for themselves. However, the Catechists team faltered, managing to score only 45 runs, ultimately conceding the match.

In the 2nd match, the Clergy Lions won the toss and elected to bat first, setting a target of 59 runs in 6 overs. The Catechist’s team, unable to achieve the required score, faced a formidable challenge as Fr. Aamir Bhatti displayed a remarkable performance, securing four wickets in a single over. This outstanding feat contributed significantly to the Clergy Lions’ triumph in the match.




In the 3rd match witnessed a spirited encounter between the Catechists Lions and Seminarians, resulting in a comfortable victory for the Seminarians against the Catechists Lions. The momentous occasion drew to a close with Archbishop Benny Mario Travas presenting the prestigious trophy to the winners. Simon Bhatti was bestowed with the well-deserved Man of the Match award, while Fr. Aamir Bhatti received the distinguished Man of the Series trophy. Fr. Asher Liaquat’s (captain of the clergy team) exceptional leadership earned him the coveted Warner Cup, while the Runner-up Trophy was presented to the accomplished Master Shamsheer.

Expressing his thoughts on the significance of organizing the cricket match, Archbishop Benny Mario Travas highlighted its purpose in fostering mutual unity and nurturing love among the Christian community. He emphasized that the event symbolized gratitude for the blessings bestowed by God over the past 75 years, while also serving as a means to encourage love and brotherhood among believers.

Concluding the memorable match, the players joined Archbishop Benny Mario Travas in a group photograph, encapsulating the spirit of unity and solidarity that permeated the entire event.
