Christians must participate in Census to show our strength, Bishop Benny
Multan (Amjad Gulzar, Executive Director – Caritas Pakistan): Caritas Pakistan Multan Conducted one day session with community Leaders from 19 Parishes of the Diocese. 63 leaders and parish representatives participated in the awareness session.
Speaking with the participants His Lordship Most Rev. Bishop Benny Mario Travas said that it is best opportunity for our Christian nation to participate in 6th Population and housing census in order to show our strength in Pakistan. He further emphasized that all division of resources, seats in provincial and national assemblies will be based on current census, therefore we must own and feel the responsibility to volunteer our services.
Mr. Samuel Clement (Executive Secretary CPM) Shared the Historical Background of National Census, Objectives of the Awareness Campaign and shared practical steps for parish awareness campaign. Mr. Ambrose Gill (Diocesan Focal Person) facilitated parish groups in planning awareness campaign at parish level. He also shared role of volunteers in Parish Awareness Campaigns. Participants showed their great interest and ensured their commitment and volunteer services for the awareness campaign and effective role during census.
The two-month long sixth population census will be held from March 15 till May 15 after a gap of 19 years.
The census will be carried out in two phases across the Country. The first phase will be completed in April 15 while the second phase is likely to be initiated from April 24 and will end in May 15.
So far, five population census have been held in Pakistan in 1951, 1961, 1972, 1981 and 1998.
For 2017 census, the 1998 model will be followed and Pakistan army will again be engaged to hold the exercise in a more credible and transparent manner.
