Learning Points: Help spreading awareness against ‘Pedophiles’
How many more lives must be subjected to forced conversion beforeimplementation of existing laws takes place. We will not see this transformation soon enough as long as these miscreants roam about. Knowing that these culprits can secure the repeal of law harnesses pedophiles in Pakistan.
This injustice is not on a one-to-one basis since Pakistan ranks sixth on the list of the world’s most dangerous countries. According to White Ribbon Pakistan there are more than 1800 cases of domestic violence and over 5500 women abductions. As these cases spike, under the shadow of coronavirus, conviction rates remain relatively low. Only 2.5% of all reported cases are seen convicted by the courts.
In addition, the data analysis involving 162 cases of conversion of mainly Hindu and Christian minor girls from Punjab and Sindh explains the vulnerability of minority women to various gender crimes. The trends reflected in the data from 2013 to 2020 shows that no province or minority was immune to this abuse and at least 46% of the converted females were below the age of 18, while the age of 37% was not mentioned. Only 16% of females were more than 18 years. A spike was seen in 2019, Bahawalpur district topped the list in reported conversions (21), followed by Karachi and Lahore.
