Archbishop Benny appointed new Apostolic Administrator of Lahore
Lahore: His Grace Archbishop Benny Mario Travas, Archbishop of Archdiocese of Karachi has officially taken additional Charge of Archdiocese of Lahore as Apostolic Administrator. Archbishop Sebastian Shaw of Lahore takes ‘sabbatical’ amid rumored suspension.
On August 18, 2024, Archbishop Benny Travas celebrated his inaugural Holy Mass as the Apostolic Administrator of the Lahore Archdiocese at Sacred Heart Cathedral, Lahore. He was joined by Fr. Rafhan Fayyaz, Rector of the Cathedral. The Archbishop received a warm and festive welcome, marked by the presentation of a flower bouquet and the traditional gesture of being greeted with garlands. This joyous occasion marked the beginning of his tenure as the spiritual leader of the Lahore Archdiocese.
Fr. Asif Sardar, Vicar General of the Lahore Archdiocese, announced on August 15 that Archbishop Benny Mario Travas of Karachi will serve as the apostolic administrator of Lahore. Sardar made the announcement during Holy Mass at Sacred Heart Cathedral in Lahore, stating that Archbishop Shaw is taking a “sabbatical” and asking for prayers for his health and guidance.

Archbishop Benny Mario Travas was born on November 21, 1966, in Karachi. After completing his studies at the Minor & Major Seminary of Karachi, he was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Karachi on December 7, 1990. Following seven years of dedicated pastoral ministry, he was sent to Rome to pursue a Licentiate in Canon Law, which he obtained from the prestigious Pontifical Urbaniana University in 1997.
Upon his return to Karachi, Archbishop Travas assumed various key roles, including Vicar General and Rector of the St. Pius X Minor Seminary. He also served as a professor at the National Catholic Institute of Theology, Karachi, and as a Judge of the Ecclesiastical Court of Karachi. Additionally, he was a member of the College of Consultors and the Council of Priests, demonstrating his commitment to the archdiocese.
Archbishop Travas’ notable appointments include his designation as Apostolic Administrator of Multan Diocese by Pope Francis on June 13, 2014, and his subsequent appointment as Bishop of Multan on May 29, 2015. Most recently, Pope Francis appointed him as Archbishop of Karachi on February 11, 2021, succeeding Joseph Coutts. His installation as Archbishop took place at St. Patrick’s Cathedral on April 11, 2021.
