Where does the Pope’s authority come from?

Suzanna Joseph

Catholic opponents suggest that in the fifth century the roman emperor Constantine gave his political and religious rights over to the Pope. Catholic opponents put forward ideas based on hearsay. They are ill-informed about Constantine’s rule. As they declare transfer of power took place in the fifth century.

Whereas, history dictates that Constantine reigned from 306 to 337. Readers should assess these inaccurate narratives of catholic opponents and decide whether to follow them.

The Holy Bible cites “You shall not repeat a false report. Do not join your hand with the wicked to be a witness supporting violence.” (Matthew 23:1)

“You belong to your father the devil and you willingly carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning and does not stand in truth, because there is no truth in him. When he tells a lie, he speaks in character, because he is a liar and the father of lies.” (John 8:44)
Therefore, we must always side with the truth.

Pope does not need rights from any human being. Christ instituted papal supremacy and papal succession is traced back to Saint Peter the Apostle in the 1st century.

Saint Peter the Apostle was the first Pope. Since, Saint Peter’s time till today there are 226 successive Popes.

Remember, rights given by human authorities remain only for a certain period. Whereas a right given by Jesus Christ remains till the end of times.

Historically, many kingdoms collapsed over the centuries regardless of power. Similarly, the early church created many Christian denominations, but none survived. Catholic church is the oldest denomination which has miraculously stood the test of time, given that it dates back to 2000 years.

Catholic opponents must realize that when they challenge the Catholic Church, they are challenging its creator Jesus Christ himself.

Pope’s authority is derived from the ‘Confession of Saint Peter’ documented in the Holy Bible “And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it.” (Matthew 16:18)
