What is the difference between alcohol and wine?

Wine is juice extracted from crushed grapes containing approximately 11 percent alcohol. Referring to the Holy Bible we come to know that in Palestine, the Israeli used wine as a drink, served along with food and was a significant part of the wedding feast in the society. (Refer to St. John 2:1-12).




Jesus Christ used wine at the Passover meal. In the New Testament, wine symbolizes the blood of Christ. The ceremony involving wine is a replication of Christ’s act in which he says, “Do this in remembrance of me.” (Luke 22:19)

On the Last Super he said to his disciples, “Drink from it, all of you, for this is my blood of the covenant, which will be shed on behalf of many for the forgiveness of sins.” (Matthew 26:28)

Catholic church commemorates this moment in history by using wine during Eucharistic mass. However, this wine differs from regular wine. For one, this wine is called Sacramental wine, made according to the code of canon law, which states, “The wine must be naturally fermented with nothing added to it and the wine itself cannot have soured or become vinegar, nor it can have anything artificially added to it like preservatives or flavor.”

Comparatively, alcohol is made from distilled liquor containing 37 percent ethanol and used for intoxication.
