Archdiocese of Lahore will distribute masks without discrimination

Lahore (Suzanna Joseph): Saturday, March 21, 2020, Archbishop Sebastian Francis Shaw OFM along with Father Mushtaq Piyara Rector of Sacred Heart Cathedral, Lahore conducted a training session for self-stitching clinical masks for protection against coronavirus.

Around thirty women took part in this session. Archbishop Sebastian Francis Shaw reiterated the importance of educating others on stitching the mask to help everyone, and to discourage profit maximization. He said, “We will freely supply masks to those who cannot afford it. People who do not have the talent for sewing can also contribute by purchasing cloth and supplying it. It is our Christian duty to help each other and to cooperate with the Government as together we will overcome this tribulation.”

He continued, “We will gratuitously dispense 15000 masks as we have 30 parishes, around 500 masks per parish will be given to parishioners attending mass. Also, the distribution of free masks will be done with no discrimination regarding religion, sect or race. Whether it’s a Muslim, Hindu, Sikh or Christian we must help each other because we must save as many human lives as possible.”

Archbishop announced, “We are all aware of the present day crisis regarding coronavirus (COVID 19) and its deadly impact. How it has started from a single country and now within a matter of few days has spread to every corner of the earth. The origin of its outbreak is people embracing each other and we are all aware of the rising death toll it has caused in countries like Italy, Spain, Iran, and now Pakistan. Therefore, the Archdiocese of Lahore, together with all the clergy, has decided that there will be no Sunday Masses in our churches. However, Churches will remain open, individuals can come and pray”, he added.

“We have also trained around thirty women to stitch and supply fabric masks for free, to subdue the shortage of clinical masks. ‘Keep yourself safe and keep others safe too’ should be our adage. We should continue fasting, praying, and stand firm in faith and our God will surely save us from this great peril” he concluded.
